What to expect at your first Colonic Hydrotherapy

(Colonic Irrigation)

You will be handed a consultation form on your arrival to fill in, as it will be crucial for assessing your suitability to the Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment. This form will allow the therapist to evaluate how your colonic treatment will go and what its result could be. It will contain mainly questions about your lifestyle habits and medical history as well as any possible contra-indications. This will approximately take you 10 minutes before you are invited to the treatment room. You will then discuss your consultation form through with the therapist and she will be able to answer any questions that you might have before your Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment starts.

Before the Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment

After going through your consultation form, your blood pressure will be taken to make sure that you are in the accepted range for the Colonic treatment. The Colonic treatment is carried out in a private and relaxing, safe and hygienic environment where you will also be explained to how the Colonic system works. You will then be explained how to prepare yourself for the Colonic treatment so that the therapist can exit the room to give you some private time necessary for that preparation. Once you are ready, you will call the therapist back into the treatment room by using a call button. The treatment will be able to start.

First Colonic Irrigation treatment

If this is your first Colonic Irrigation treatment and you intend to use it as body maintenance, cleansing and educational experience, it is probably best to do nothing before hand, extent to which the colon is able to get rid of its waste, state of hydration of the colon, state of the communication between the colon and the brain and body's efficiency at eliminating waste. Before your visit, avoid any food or liquid for two hours before the Colonic treatment and wear comfortable clothing.

Throughout your Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment

The water can gently be introduced into the colon and the temperature will always be as close to the body temperature as possible (36.5 degre Celsius). The Angel of Water has a safety valve which switches off automatically if it goes under 36.5 Celsius or above the temperature allowed (39 degre Celsius). The Legato's temperature is monitored by the therapist throughout the treatment.
The therapist will be with you at all time in order to assist you throughout the treatment. Sometimes in case of long standing constipation, inflammed bowel or considerable nervousness, the first treatment can initially bring some discomfort or slight of pain to the start of the treatment. The therapist will use abdominal massage techniques as well as helping you to relax with some breathing techniques (most people who have Colonic Irrigation have no discomfort or pain when they have their Colonic treatment). Aromatherapy diffuser lamps are switched on throughout the treatment in order to enhance relaxation. Some people find it difficult to "let go" while the therapist is in the treatment room. As she respects the need for you to have a moment to yourself, she will gladly exit the room to give you some time to adjust to the feeling. She will check on you regularly throughout the treatment as abdominal massage is necessary to a more efficient therapy and not to forget that she will need to assist your treatment in order to evaluate the state of your bowel.

After your treatment

Once the treatment is complete, the therapist will exit the room for you to get dressed while she prepares you a complementary drink. This drink will help you to replenish some lost body fluids that you experienced throughout your Colonic Irrigation treatment.
She will then give you some lifestyle advice related to that treatment. Only when you have had your first Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment, will she be able to assess when you should next come back for your second treatment or if you need a course.
Since the colon has been cleared of solid matters, it may take up to four days before your bowel movements are resumed which is normal. Some water is absorbed through the colon's wall during a Colonic and one may notice the need to pass urine for a few hours afterwards. This beneficial effect of flushing the kidneys may also be enhanced by drinking a few glasses of water with the juice of half a lemon added to each glass.
A Colonic has a profound effect on the body and many people feel so good afterwards that they want to double their jogging or work out time. Caution is advised here for it can be overdone. Although light to moderate exercise is good if you are used to it. Any strenuous activity should be avoided up to 24 hours after the treatment. Ideally, keep the rest of the day for relaxation to enable the body to continue the Colon cleansing process. If a condition such as habitual constipation or irritable bowel has existed for a while, tiredness might be experienced for a couple of days after the Colonic.
A light diet of fruits and vegetables, salads, soups and chicken or fish should be followed for two to three days. Although, irrigating the colon does not remove all of the intestinal bacteria, it is still beneficial to take probiotics to maintain bacterial balance.
